The Mani Rimdu Festival is a colorful, noisy occasion that takes place in the most spectacular of settings. Performed by the monks of Chiwong and Tengboche monasteries, it depicts the victory of Buddhism over the ancient 'Bon' religion. The festival lasts for three days and is well attended by the Sherpa people who often trek for many days to witness this important event.
Tengboche Mani Rimdu starts on the full moon of October, and the Chiwong Mani Rimdu on the full moon of November.
Programs: Preparations including making the sand Mandala and Tormas (symbolic offerings made of colored butter and barley flour)
Drupchen ceremonies start and continue uninterrupted for 8 days.
Monks practice dancing without masks
Giving the blessing to the general public (Wang)
Famous Mask Dances preformed by the monks in a special day long ceremony. Afterwards the Sherpa community sing and dance the whole night long. Concluding Fire Puja.

Essential Information
Please maintain Politeness and respect when in the temple area;
Take off your shoes before entering the main temple or smaller shrine rooms.
When sitting down, do not point the soles of your feet or shoes towards holy objects or the Lamas.
Do not point at anything with your finger; use your whole hand.
do not talk or laugh loudly inside the the temple. it is traditional to make offerings of money when visiting the temple; when visiting a Lama it is customary to offer this wrapped in a white scarf (khatak).
